Honoring September 11 Through Service

National Days of Service remind us to take inventory of our community’s highest needs. September 11th is an opportunity to ask: how can I help serve my neighbors?

As we reflect on the events of September 11, 2001, we remember not only those we lost but also the spirit of unity and kindness that emerged in its wake. In 2009, September 11th was designated as a National Day of Service, with a goal of turning grief into an opportunity to give back.

Service is at the heart of what we do. Our volunteers help us ensure that families in need have a place to call home. While furniture donations are an important part of our work, our volunteers ensure each piece is cleaned, repaired or simply organized so we can deliver it to the best home possible.

National Days of Service remind us as a community to take inventory of our community’s highest needs. September 11th is an opportunity to ask: how can I help serve my neighbors?

Ways to Serve with Us

As a returning volunteer or newcomers, you can fill a variety of volunteer roles that make a difference:

  • SORTER: Organize donated housewares and group items to be easily stocked, stored and redistributed.

  • PERSONAL SHOPPER: Shop, tag and pack requested items for clients who have been referred to us by partner agencies.

  • OFFICE SUPPORT: Assist our office staff in processing forms, answering questions and maintaining supplies needed for daily operations.

  • WAREHOUSE ASSISTANT: Support warehouse staff with accepting donations, loading/unloading vehicles, preparing deliveries, making minor furniture repairs and cleaning.

By volunteering with us, you become part of a legacy rooted in service, generosity and community renewal. Together, we can transform furnishings into hope – one bed, one kitchen table and one home at a time.
