Celebrating the Impact of Volunteering
The impact of volunteering doesn’t stop with our clients. Volunteers tell us that their experience has given them a deeper connection to their community and a sense of purpose that stays with them long after their work ends.
April is National Volunteer Month, a time dedicated to recognizing the people who generously give their time, skills and energy to strengthen our communities. Volunteers are at the heart of everything we do at The Furniture Project. From warehouse support and furniture repair to administrative help, volunteers play a critical role in helping us transform the lives of the people we serve.
The Ripple Effect
The impact of volunteering with The Furniture Project doesn’t stop with our clients. Many volunteers tell us that their experience has given them a deeper connection to their community and a sense of purpose that stays with them long after their work ends.
Volunteering is also a reminder that meaningful change doesn’t require grand gestures. Sometimes, it’s the simple act of showing up, sharing time with others and supporting our neighbors. When we step outside of ourselves to show up for our neighbors and support them during a time when they need it most, the impact is felt deeply.
“I come here and it makes me happy. I walk away with a big smile on my face every time. The Furniture Project provides a sense of purpose for me to serve a community in need.”
In addition to the community impact, our volunteers share that – to them – volunteering has provided a renewed sense of energy and purpose.
Patty Pandzik first came to The Furniture Project simply wanting to get more involved in Omaha. After meeting a new friend who volunteered with us, Patty decided to join her one day and she’s been coming back ever since. Now volunteering weekly, Patty says it’s the people who make all the difference.
“I come here and it makes me happy,” Patty shares. “I walk away with a big smile on my face every time. The Furniture Project provides a sense of purpose to serve a community in need. Helping the team and seeing the results brings me joy and energy.” What began as a way to give back to the community quickly became a place of connection and belonging.
During a typical shift, she might help gather items for families, check in donations or support efforts behind-the-scenes in the warehouse. She considers herself an ambassador, even connecting her neighbors to our mission.
Patty says the most impactful experience she’s had is seeing refugee families light up when receiving essential household items. She says this is how she knows the impact is real. “The Furniture Project is a warm, welcoming place where your time truly matters. It’s not hard to help out and it makes a meaningful difference,” she said.
