This Year, Your Gift Matters More Than Ever

Many of the individuals we serve are navigating life on the margins, living at or below the poverty line, with limited resources and few support systems. Our clients are often rebuilding after trauma, displacement or major life transitions including fleeing domestic violence, incarceration or exiting homelessness.

For families starting over, it matters to have a safe place to sit down to dinner or sleep at night. It’s not just furniture. It represents security, stability and hope. At The Furniture Project, we believe that something as simple as a couch or a set of dishes can transform a house into a home.

Why It Matters

When a families and individuals experience a housing crisis, they often move into empty apartments. No beds. No tables. No couches. Nothing to gather around. That emptiness can feel overwhelming, but it can also have real impact on people’s health and wellness.

In 2024, Your Support Furnished Hope for Many of Our Neighbors, Including >>

It matters that a parent can sit with their family for a meal.

Furniture is foundational to a person’s mental wellness, self-worth and ability to function well in daily life. Imagine not having a place to share family moments or recover together. Individuals in unfurnished or under-furnished homes report increased stress, anxiety, depression and poor sleep. The absence of furniture creates an environment that undermines health and well-being.

It matters that a child has a bed to sleep in.

Children in poverty are significantly more likely to get insufficient sleep. Imagine your child starting their school day exhausted because they don’t have a bed to sleep in. Of children living below the poverty line, 35% report getting less than six hours of sleep per night compared to 28% of children from higher-income households.

It matters that comfort and dignity are part of everyone’s home.

Furniture enables people to pursue life goals. Imagine not having a couch to rest on after a long day’s work. When people no longer sleep on the floor or eat from the ground, they can focus on employment, parenting, education and rejoining their communities.

The Need is Urgent

2024 was a record year for The Furniture Project. We partnered with more than 200 social service agencies and 750 case workers. We furnished 1,622 households, a 40.8% increase over 2023, and served 5,233 individuals which included 2,590 adults and 2,643 children.

Additionally, The Furniture Project partnered with St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Elkhorn to respond to the April 26, 2024 tornado. We helped furnish the homes of 40 individuals who had been displaced by the storm.
